How a simple breakfast visit became one of my favorite meals in Kansas City
When I stepped into Dear Donna on Gillis Street, I didn’t expect a simple breakfast stop to become such a memorable experience. The space immediately felt welcoming with a minimalist, airy style. Clean lines, soft light, and subtle Asian-inspired touches blended perfectly with the modern Kansas City vibe. It felt calm, intentional, and the perfect backdrop for flavors that linger long after the last bite.

I chose the egg sandwich with hash browns and special sauce and it was everything I hoped for. The hash browns added a satisfying crunch, the egg was perfectly cooked, and the spicy-yet-light special sauce danced on my palate in the most enjoyable way. Every bite felt thoughtful, like the kitchen had carefully crafted each element to create a memorable experience.

For dessert, I had to try the banana pudim with a sesame cookie. It was incredible. Light, sweet, and perfectly balanced, the dessert felt playful yet refined. Each bite made me smile and reminded me how much I love discovering small details that make a dish very special.

What really makes Dear Donna special is the talent behind it. The restaurant is led by Johnny and Helen Jo Leach, a husband-and-wife team with a deep love for food and community. They previously ran the kitchen at The Town Company in the Hotel Kansas City and even earned recognition as James Beard Award semifinalists. The restaurant is named after Johnny’s mother, Donna Bennett, and you can feel the care and personal touch in everything from the food to the welcoming atmosphere.
The vibe at Dear Donna is casual, bright, and full of life. It’s a place where you can enjoy a coffee, savor a meal, and feel connected to the energy of a new neighborhood favorite. Weekends can get busy because of how popular it has become, but a weekday visit is a wonderful way to enjoy it without waiting.

Dear Donna deserves every bit of the hype. Kansas City has a new gem that brings creativity, skill, and heart to the table. If you haven’t visited yet, stop by, meet the team, and enjoy the food. I can only hope they stay here for a long time because this is exactly the kind of restaurant Kansas City needs.
