Q39 Brings Championship BBQ to Lee’s Summit — And It’s Exactly What the Community Has Been Waiting For

Kansas City has never been short on incredible barbecue, but every now and then, a restaurant raises the standard for what BBQ can be. For me, that restaurant has always been Q39.

After years of returning for smoky brisket, perfectly caramelized burnt ends, and what I genuinely consider one of the most complete barbecue menus in the city, I’m excited to see Q39 opening its newest location in Lee’s Summit on August 3. This marks the restaurant’s fourth location and its first in the rapidly growing Oldham Village development, bringing its chef-driven approach to one of the metro’s fastest-growing communities.

More Than Just Another BBQ Joint

What has always separated Q39 from the crowded Kansas City barbecue scene is its philosophy.

Created by championship pitmaster Rob Magee, Q39 blends competitive barbecue techniques with a chef’s attention to detail. Instead of simply serving smoked meats on trays, every plate feels thoughtfully composed, balancing smoke, seasoning, texture, and presentation. It’s barbecue elevated without ever losing its authenticity.

As someone who has eaten at hundreds of restaurants across Kansas City, I can confidently say Q39 is one of those rare places where locals proudly take visitors. It’s equally suited for celebrating a special occasion, introducing someone to Kansas City barbecue, or simply satisfying a craving for world-class smoked meat.

A Beautiful New Home in Lee’s Summit

The new Lee’s Summit restaurant was designed to feel much more than a traditional smokehouse.

Guests can expect an open scratch kitchen centered around wood-fired grills, a spacious outdoor patio, a full-service cocktail bar, private dining space, and the same polished hospitality that has become part of the Q39 experience. Whether you’re stopping in for a weekday lunch, date night, family dinner, or gathering with friends, the space feels intentionally designed for every occasion.

Located at 240 SW Oldham Parkway, just off Highway 50 near Highway 291, the restaurant offers dine-in, carryout, online ordering, and catering services. Reservations are already available ahead of opening day.

My Go-To Orders

One of the reasons I continue coming back is the consistency.

The burnt ends remain some of my favorites anywhere in Kansas City, delivering the perfect balance between bark, tenderness, and rich smoky flavor. The brisket slices are beautifully moist, while the famous “Best Wings on the Planet” absolutely live up to their reputation.

If it’s your first visit, I always recommend ordering one of the combination barbecue plates so you can sample multiple meats alongside their incredible house-made sides. It’s the best introduction to what Q39 does so well.

Why This Opening Matters

Lee’s Summit has become one of the most exciting dining destinations in the Kansas City metro, and welcoming Q39 feels like a natural next step.

Rather than asking residents to drive across town for one of Kansas City’s most celebrated barbecue experiences, Q39 is bringing its award-winning menu directly into the community while maintaining the quality that built its reputation over the years.

For longtime fans, it’s another convenient location to enjoy a favorite restaurant. For first-time visitors, it’s the perfect opportunity to discover why Q39 continues to be one of the names that consistently comes up whenever people ask, “Where should I eat barbecue in Kansas City?”

Final Thoughts

There are restaurants you visit because they’re popular, and then there are restaurants you return to because they consistently exceed expectations.

For me, Q39 has always been the latter.

Every visit reminds me why Kansas City is considered one of the barbecue capitals of the world, and seeing this beloved local brand continue to grow while staying true to its craft is exciting.

If you’ve never experienced Q39, the Lee’s Summit opening is the perfect excuse. And if you’re already a fan like I am, you’ll probably find yourself making the drive to Oldham Parkway sooner rather than later.

Trust me, come hungry!!!
