If you’re looking for unique things to do in Kansas City, there’s something new to experience at one of my favorite rooftops in the city.
I recently visited Percheron Rooftop at Crossroads Hotel Kansas City for the unveiling of Camouflage, Codes & Connections, a new permanent art installation by acclaimed Chicago-based artist and designer Bob Faust.
Between the Kansas City skyline, art, history and deeper meaning behind the installation, this was such a special night in the Crossroads Arts District.
A New Look at Percheron Rooftop
Percheron is already known as one of the best rooftop bars in Kansas City, with cocktails, food and incredible skyline views.
Now there’s another reason to visit.
Bob Faust’s Camouflage, Codes & Connections transforms the rooftop with colorful patterns, words and symbols inspired by history, identity and community.
One of my favorite parts of the event was meeting Bob and hearing the stories behind his work. Once you understand the meaning of the different phrases, you start seeing the entire rooftop differently.

LGBTQ+ History Hidden in the Art
The installation includes historic coded phrases such as “Friend of Dorothy,” once used within LGBTQ+ communities as a discreet way of identifying and connecting with one another.
Faust also incorporates references like “Joe sent me,” connecting the installation to ideas of hidden communication, resilience and belonging.
Seeing those messages displayed so openly today is what made this installation feel especially meaningful to me.
The History Behind Crossroads Hotel
The location itself has a story.
Crossroads Hotel occupies historic buildings connected to Kansas City’s industrial past, including the former Pabst Brewing Depot, built in 1911.
Even the Percheron name has historical roots. Percheron horses were once used to pull beer wagons through Kansas City.
Today, that history meets contemporary art, food and hospitality, which is exactly what makes the Crossroads Arts District one of my favorite areas of Kansas City.
