If you’re looking for things to do in Kansas City this September, Disney’s Newsies at Starlight Theatre is a great night out. We recently experienced the show and made the evening even more special with a pre-show dinner at Starlight’s Applause Club.
Newsies at Starlight Theatre
Disney’s Newsies is playing at Starlight Theatre in Kansas City from September 8 through September 13, 2026, with performances beginning at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, September 13 is the final performance, so there are only a few chances to catch it.
Inspired by the real Newsboys’ Strike of 1899, Newsies follows Jack Kelly and a group of young newspaper sellers who come together to fight for what they believe in.
The musical features music by Alan Menken and favorite songs like “Seize the Day,” “Santa Fe,” and “Carrying the Banner.” Expect incredible choreography, high-energy dancing, and big ensemble performances that look amazing on Starlight’s outdoor stage.
This production is especially meaningful because it is produced by Starlight Theatre and combines national talent with Kansas City performers, including 33 local high school students from Starlight’s Blue Star Awards program.
Dinner at the Applause Club
Before Newsies, we started our evening with dinner at the Applause Club at Starlight Theatre, and I definitely recommend adding it to your Broadway experience.
Arriving early for dinner means you can relax, enjoy the atmosphere, have a drink, and then walk straight to your seats for the show. It’s a great option for a Kansas City date night or special evening with friends and family.
The Applause Club offers a pre-show buffet with entrées, sides, pasta, and desserts. Reservations should be made in advance and are subject to availability.
